What is Pilates

The PilatesĀ© method of body conditioning is a unique system of stretching & strengthening exercises developed over ninety years ago by Joseph H. Pilates. Pilates unites the body and mind and provides the dancer and non-dancer exercises to improve abdominal and back strength, flexibility, and postural alignment. Pilates is an exercise-based system that aims to develop the body’s “center” in order to create a stable core for all types of movement. Through the process of regular classes, the body’s structure realigns and a balance is achieved within the muscular-skeletal system. Eventually the body will move with maximum efficiency and minimum effort, maximizing a person’s potential without risking injury using his 6 Principles- Breath, Concentration, Center, Control, Precision, Flowing Movement.

Benefits of Pilates

Benefits are improves body alignment, strengthens without bulk, increase flexibility, develops core strength and back muscles, improves posture, increase energy, promotes weight loss, increase circulation, breath, movement flow and creates long, lean muscles, increases awareness with body/mind and overall appearance.

Benefits to Reformer/Equipment Appointment sessions

The reformer offers the famous benefits of Pilates including overall strength, flexibility, coordination, and balance. These things in turn lead to daily life improvements like better posture, graceful, efficient movement, and for many, relief from pain associated with physical imbalances such as back pain. The Universal Reformer creates a unique and varied exercise environment.
The reformer is large enough to accommodate full-range motion which is wonderful for increasing flexibility while building strength. It seems to invite the length we want to create in the body. And it trains the body to sustain that length. Pushing and pulling with legs or arms against the resistance of the springs, carriage, and body weight is generally strength building. The exercises provide enough resistance and movement variety to help build strong bones. The reformer is a set-up for eccentric contraction when a muscle lengthens as it resists force. That is one of the keys to achieving the long, strong muscles without bulk that Pilates is known for.
The instability of a rolling carriage with the springs set at different levels of resistance provides all kinds of stability challenges that develop core strength and promote better balance. The stronger core, the better the balance, posture, and overall well-being. Exercising with the reformer is possible for anyone, at any level of fitness.
